Former leaders of the Israeli military and Mossad have called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end his “political” war in Gaza, urging him to prioritize the release of hostages and an eventual ceasefire.
Concerns Over Netanyahu’s Strategy
In an interview with NBC News, former Mossad chief Danny Yatom criticized Netanyahu’s leadership, claiming that the prime minister’s priorities seem to differ from those of Israeli society. Yatom emphasized that Netanyahu’s main goal appears to be retaining power, while many in the Israeli military and intelligence community are pushing for a strategy focused on humanitarian concerns.
The Hostage Situation and Calls for Ceasefire
Israeli officials report that nearly 59 hostages remain in Gaza, with less than half believed to be alive. More than 1,000 Israeli Air Force reservists have signed a recent letter that has spurred discussion on Israel’s position. In exchange for the detainees’ release, many of them are demanding a ceasefire. Last month, Israeli soldiers violated the March ceasefire deal by starting bombs and military operations, undermining the fragile truce.
Political Disagreements and Pressures
Eran Duvdevani, a retired colonel in the Israel Defense Forces, is among the former Israeli military officers who have maintained that political intentions or retaliation should not be the driving forces behind the current battle. They believe that the primary focus of the war’s end should be humanitarian issues, especially those pertaining to the prisoners. Netanyahu’s administration relies on far-right coalition members who oppose terminating the military campaign, making the political climate in Israel even more problematic.
Domestic and Global Repercussions
Netanyahu’s choices over the Gaza conflict have been influenced by political backing from extreme groups. This includes support from National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. If the conflict ends without accomplishing their goals, these leaders have warned to stop backing Netanyahu. Netanyahu’s confidence has also been greatly impacted by the Trump administration, complicating matters further.
