Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki

Eruption Sends Ash Plume 11 Miles Into the Sky

Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in Indonesia erupted violently on July 7, 2025, blasting ash and gas 11 miles into the atmosphere. This was the biggest explosion since the same volcano erupted in 2024, killing nine people and injuring dozens more.

According to the Indonesian Geology Agency, the alert level is still at its maximum. Lava, boulders, and gas were among the volcanic materials that moved up to five kilometers down the slopes.

Expanded Danger Zone and Airport Closure

As eruptions intensify, officials are reassessing the danger zone surrounding the 5,197-foot volcano. As risk evaluations go, the exclusion area, which is now 7 kilometers (4.3 miles), may be expanded.

Because of continuous earthquake activity, the nearby Frans Seda Airport is still closed. This continues the delays to travel that started in early 2024

 Seismic, Magma, and Lava Hazards

Lava was seen filling the crater in drone footage, indicating deep magma migration and increased volcanic seismic activity. This development signals a potential for even more powerful eruptions.

Muhammad Wafid, head of the Geology Agency, stated from Switzerland:

“We must reevaluate to enlarge the danger zone… this eruption carries aviation and residential risks.”

Indonesia’s Volcanic Legacy

Indonesia sits atop the Ring of Fire, a geologically active zone prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. With over 120 active volcanoes, it is one of the world’s most seismically volatile regions.

Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki is a twin volcano, alongside Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, located in the Flores Timur district.

This eruption is one of the largest since 2010, when Mount Merapi erupted, killing 353 people and displacing hundreds of thousands.

Public Safety and Evacuations

Authorities are calling for evacuations and a stop to all tourist activity near the mountain, however no injuries have been recorded as of yet. Last year, more than 6,500 residents were evacuated, and similar measures could be implemented once more.
