The celestial event will occur early on Friday morning, around 5:30 a.m. This rare alignment will create a smiley face shape, but you’ll need to tilt your head or rotate your photo to get the full effect.
If you’re in the Pittsburgh area, be sure to look up! You can see the event without any special equipment, but binoculars or a telescope will enhance the view, making the alignment clearer.
Weather Forecast: Will It Be a Smiley Day?
The weather might be a challenge for skywatchers, as rain is expected to move in over Western Pennsylvania. KDKA First Alert Meteorologist Ray Petelin has warned that cloudy skies could obscure the rare event for some viewers, potentially leading to some frowns instead of smiles.

The happy face on Friday is only one of many fascinating astronomical occurrences that will take place in 2025. The Lyrid meteor shower glowed in the night sky earlier this year, and March saw a number of eclipses, including a partial solar eclipse and a total lunar eclipse.
The Perseid meteor shower, dubbed the “best meteor shower of the year” by NASA, will peak on August 12 and 13 of 2025. As a result, there are numerous opportunities to see breathtaking celestial events all year round.
